Neubert: Butch’s Bucket Brigade 5K, Butler Road Race highlight upcoming local race schedule

School’s out for summer.

Before those kids settle into comfortable boredom, get them moving with June’s family friendly road races.

Butch’s Bucket Brigade 5K celebrates its 12th running Saturday in conjunction with Worthington Carnival. There’s also a quarter-mile bike race for kids ages 10 and under.

Butch’s Bucket Brigade is named for Larry “Butch” Cypher, a lifetime member of Worthington-West Franklin Volunteer Fire Department. Butch started as a firefighter and first responder, then, due to injury, he drove the firetruck and served as fire chief.

“We even had a Dalmatian named Pepper that Dad taught to ride on top of the truck,” Butch’s daughter Sharon said. “He was the hit of the local fireman’s carnival parades.”

When Butch died in 2012, his family organized the Bucket Brigade to honor what the department and its members had meant to them over the years. Proceeds from the race benefit Worthington-West Franklin Volunteer Fire Department.

Bucket Brigade 5K welcomes runners and walkers of all abilities. Co-race director and one of Butch’s granddaughters, Allie Green, said the out-and-back course isn’t level but it’s good for beginners, kids and families.

There are competitive awards, but many people jog or walk for fun. Dogs and strollers are welcome.

If your kids would rather ride than run, Butch’s Bucket Brigade also offers a quarter-mile loop kids’ bike race that passes by Butch’s family home in downtown Worthington. There are separate heats for ages 5 and under, 6-8 and 9-10. Helmets are required. First three finishers in each age group earn trophies, but all kids receive a ribbon and a ride ticket for the Worthington carnival.

Register at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Worthington/ButchsBucketBrigade until 3 p.m. Thursday or on race day beginning at 7:45 a.m. in Worthington. Also, check out www.facebook.com/WWFVFD for family memories by Butch Cypher’s grandkids and Worthington Carnival info.

50 years of Butler Road Race

It’s hard to believe, but at 9 a.m. June 28, Butler Road Race will celebrate 50 years of dashing down Main Street. It’s advertised as the “longest continuously held road race in Western Pennsylvania.”

Although the event has evolved over the years, its focus is always Butler County and its residents. All proceeds from Butler Road Race 5-Mile and 2K events benefit Butler Family YMCA’s Annual Support Campaign which funds programs and services for kids, families and seniors in the county. This campaign ensures everyone can participate in these programs.

Butler Road Race 5-Mile starts in Diamond Park at 9 a.m. with the 2K (1.60 miles) starting at 9:05. Both events run out-and-back from Main Street to Penn Street. Participants must be finished by the cutoff time of 10:30 a.m.

The event can be hot. There will be water stations on the course, but Christina Dreher, Marketing and Development Director for Butler YMCA, advises carrying water if needed. As always, CB Rangers and Butler police will monitor the course for safety.

Butler Road Race offers awards for top three male and female finishers in both distances and age groups from 5 and under through 70-plus in the 2K, 12 and under through 70-plus in the 5-Mile. First male and female Butler County finishers earn the Donny Bayne Memorial Award. To celebrate the 50th Anniversary, pre-registered participants will receive a special vintage-designed T-shirt.

Register for the Butler Road Race online until noon June 27 at runsignup.com/Race/PA/Butler/ButlerRoadRace. Day of event registration opens at 7:30 a.m. in Diamond Park with cash or check only.
