Improvements a positive for Roebling Park

Roebling Park on North Rebecca Street, between Main and Water streets in Saxonburg, features three acres of grass and woods, with a gazebo-style bandstand that is the site of many events.

Positive changes are coming to Roebling Park in Saxonburg.

Saxonburg Borough Council approved fixing a pavilion and the addition of a playground at its Tuesday, June 17 meeting.

These improvements will benefit the lives of residents in Saxonburg and beyond. Plus, it will bring attention to the park, which is known for its connection to the invention of wire rope.

The council approved a memorandum of understanding between the Saxonburg Rotary and the borough to allow the Rotary to move forward with the construction of a playground within the park.

The playground, initially planned elsewhere within Saxonburg, will be bigger by moving to the park. It will include a swing set, monkey bars, a balance beam and a replica of the Saxonburg Rotary trolley.

Also at that meeting, the council announced it is seeking a Local Share Account grant from the state to replace the park’s pavilion, which has cracked pavement.

The goal is to build a larger pavilion that could seat 50 — about twice the space’s current capacity.

This means the bridge replic also may need some attention, but this isn’t news to anyone. The bridge had to be moved “one way or another,” borough manager Steven May said.

It’s great to see Saxonburg taking these steps to improve Roebling Park. We’re hopeful this could get the ball rolling and benefit the park — and its wire rope shop — too.
