A man was attempting suicide when he was struck by a train Monday morning, June 16, near the 1000 block of Gameland Road in Donegal Township, according to state police.

Timothy McCullough was flown to Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh for treatment following the 11:45 a.m. incident, police said in a Wednesday news release.

The family of McCullough later said the man was attempting to catch a ride on the train rather than attempting suicide.

The man was reportedly unconscious but breathing and remained underneath the train until he was extricated around noon, according to initial reports to Butler County Emergency Dispatch Services.

Chicora and Bruin fire departments and Karns City Regional Ambulance Service responded to the scene, along with state police. Medical treatment was provided on scene before McCullough was taken by medical helicopter to the Pittsburgh-area hospital.

This incident is pending further investigation.
