Police: Child hospitalized following beating, Butler man charged

A Butler man is facing charges after police say he beat a 10-year-old girl on multiple occasions, prompting a need for hospital treatment after a recent incident.

Albert H. Morrow III, 39, was charged Wednesday, June 11, with ungraded counts of child endangerment, reckless endangerment, terroristic threats and simple assault following an alleged May incident in Butler.

According to a criminal complaint, interviews indicated Morrow struck the 10-year-old girl with some type of wire after she was caught putting makeup on the household dog. The child was taken to the hospital on May 23, and police received a Children & Youth Services report, the complaint said.

Police uncovered more incidents in subsequent interviews. The complaint detailed one instance where the girl, then 5, slipped while attempting to avoid being whipped with a belt, resulting in a shattered tailbone and surgery for the injury.

Police said interviews also indicated the juvenile was whipped in the head repeatedly with a belt at 9 years old. In another instance, she was beaten with a wooden back scratcher until she blacked out and fell to the floor, the complaint said.

According to police, a woman intervened to stop Morrow in the alleged May incident. The criminal complaint said the girl’s buttocks and thighs had multiple open abrasions and lateral red marks, and that two open abrasions and lateral abrasions were also seen on her lower right arm.

Police said Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh reported a 10-year-old girl was seen May 23 with signs of physical abuse. Police said 57 photos were taken of the child’s injuries to her buttocks, right arm and knee.

Police then interviewed three juveniles on June 5 who spoke about Morrow beating the girl with a wire he used to install speakers in the ceiling. One of the juveniles called the tool a wire threader.

Morrow’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. June 16 before District Judge William Fullerton. He is being held in Butler County Prison on a $25,000 bond.
