Pittsburgh food bank brings free meals to children
Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank has launched its summer food program, Summer Youth Café, to support children throughout the region who rely on meals at school.
Summer Youth Café will be open to any child under the age of 18 and will offer locations across 11 counties in the area. There are no costs or registration process to get meals through the program.
According to the food bank, four locations will be available in Butler County. Each will offer a grab-and-go meals option, allowing children to pick up five days of breakfast and lunch at once.
“We know many families are struggling to makes ends meet this summer with elevated grocery and utility costs and higher housing costs,” Kelsey Gross, food bank director of child nutrition programs, said. “We want to make sure all families know these sites offer meals to any child, no strings attached.”
Two of the county’s locations are Marion Township Park, located at 2373 West Sunbury Road, Boyers, and Eau Claire Borough Park, located at 106 E. Park Ave., Eau Claire. Meals can be picked up between 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Wednesdays between June 18 and Aug. 13.
Emily Brittain Elementary School, located at 338 N. Washington St., Butler, will have pick ups on Tuesdays, while Center Avenue Community School, located at 102 Lincoln Ave., Butler, will have them on Thursdays. Pick up times and start dates for these two locations are yet to be determined.
In addition, the food bank is encouraging families to sign up for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program so they are automatically enrolled in Pennsylvania’s SUN Bucks program, which provides additional funds for groceries in the summer months.
