Summit supervisors search for grant for Bonniebrook Road repairs

SUMMIT TWP — Township supervisors are applying for a grant in hopes of raising $1.2 million for sweeping repairs to Bonniebrook Road, one of the most traveled roads in the township.

Supervisor Larry Osche explained to the board at its meeting Wednesday, June 4, that himself, alongside state municipal services contact Cory Shaffer, estimated a cost of $1.16 million for the project, an amount that the township cannot readily spare.

To pay for the project, Osche presented the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development’s multimodal grant as an option. While the July 31 deadline is approaching, Osche also motioned to send letters to state Rep. Marci Mustello, R-11th, and state Sen. Scott Hutchinson, R-21st, to help along the process.

“We’re getting over 6,000 cars in a 24-hour period,” Osche said. “It’s a way for our people to go to the hospital and the (Summit Township Elementary) school’s on there.”

Work had previously been done to fix cracks on Bonniebrook Road between Route 422 and Herman Road, but after cracks continued to reappear, the roads department decided it needs to go deeper.

This time, the repairs would look to mill off about four inches of the road before placing two and a half inches of 19 millimeter crushed stone and an inch and a half of asphalt on top.

While Osche said he’d like to get the work done this year, he’s aware of how selective the DCED grant can be. He expressed his preference for this grant compared to other grants as it allows the board to pick out their own specifications

“Last time, we used PennDOT money on it, we had to go by what PennDOT said,” Osche said. “This time, it’s not, if we can get it. If we don’t get it (this year), then we try again.”

The next Summit Township Board of Supervisors meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, June 18.
