Betty ‘Betts’ Hutchison

Hutchison

Betty Jane “Betts” Hutchison, 96, of Petrolia, entered into the arms of Jesus, her Lord and Savior, on Thursday morning, June 5, 2025, at Chicora Medical Center.

Betts was born in Petrolia on Nov. 24, 1928. She was the daughter of the late McClelland and Adda Roudebush Cousins. She attended school in Karns City. She was a dedicated active lifelong member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Karns City. She sang in the church choir and most especially enjoyed singing with her sisters in their group, “The Cousins Sisters.”

Betts had a robust personality and was a very hard worker. In the 1940s, Betts took a job at the Butler Bantam Jeep Factory and was a real-life “Rosie the Riveter.” Throughout the years, she ministered many churches alongside her husband, Bishop Harold Hutchison. In the summer, she could often be found at the church youth camps, lovingly preparing food for the many children that attended. Betts loved to drive, once stating that she should have been a trucker. Due to her need for speed, her family was relieved that she did not follow this career path. Her favorite place to be was in a rocking chair with a baby in her arms, and she lovingly rocked four generations of babies who will miss her dearly.

She is survived by a brother, Virgil R. Cousins and his wife, Sandra, of Karns City; two sisters, Carol Hutchison and her husband, David, of Chicora and Sherry Gibson and her husband, Robert “Bob,” of Butler; a special nephew, Bishop Alan Ion and his wife, Jackie, of Parker and their children; two special nieces, Alisa Fleeger and her husband, Bryan, of Butler, and Kristen Albert and her husband, Chuck, of Karns City, and their children; as well as a number of other nieces, nephews and cousins.

On March 28, 1948, Betts married Bishop Harold “Buckle” Hutchison. They shared 72 years of marriage before Buckle entered heaven on Nov. 27, 2020. We know their reunion was a joyful one.

Betts was also preceded in death by a son, Harold Frank Hutchison; her sisters, Armeida McElravy, Henrietta McElravy, Joan Ion Barger, and an infant sister, Eleanor Cousins; a brother, McClelland “Bub” Cousins Jr.; and a large number of brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the wonderful caregivers at Chicora Medical Center, especially Danielle, Amanda and Bett's niece, Heidi. The love and care shown to Betts was a great comfort.
