Miller Minutes: ‘We acquire a unique manner of speaking’

Miller Minutes with Butler Eagle reporter, Molly Miller

When I was a kid, there was a show on PBS called “World Girl” in which a young, grammatically correct girl became a superhero of words. Being the nerd that I am, I had a lot of respect for her.

Why is Word Girl now the subject of a column? Well, she came to mind after the National Spelling Bee last week, which was all over the news.

Words are what connect us to our peers, community, fanbases, artists and everyone in between, which is why I took to writing in the first place. Some of my favorite words are “effervescent,” “quagmire” and “astringent.” Look up those definitions if you dare.

How much of a word nerd am I? So much so that I will stop adult conversations to say “Oooh, good word, here’s a quarter.” (No exaggeration, but I never have quarters on me.)

As you’re frolicking to and fro in Butler County this weekend, you may come across people who pull from a vocabulary different from yours. That’s because through our jobs, friend groups and hobbies, we acquire a unique manner of speaking.

Don’t shy away from learning a few new words (or arts jargon) this weekend as you explore what events are going on in and around Butler. There is a lot to see and do, and a lot of fun people to talk to!
