Butler residents who plan to vote for the city’s mayor this November will have one more option on the ballot as a former mayor announces his candidacy.

Tom Donaldson, who served as mayor from 2014 to 2018, announced his bid to return to office for another term on Tuesday, June 3. He said he will run as an independent, third choice for city residents in the November general election.

“I am a person who is willing to work with anyone for the improvement of the city, regardless of their party affiliation and regardless of disagreements we may have, real or perceived,” Donaldson said in a news release.

Donaldson said his priorities are on public safety first and infrastructure second, and would look to lower real estate taxes and recalculate how business taxes are set. He also called for more transparency and collaboration with surrounding communities.

“I have proven experience as mayor in getting things accomplished, openness and transparency and working with all,” Donaldson said.

He will be running against incumbent Mayor Bob Dandoy, who is running as the Democratic nominee, and Councilman Don Shearer, who is running as the Republican nominee.

The election of the city’s mayor will take place Nov. 4.
