Donald Shirey
Dr. Donald L. Shirey, Ph.D., 90, of Sarver, went to be with his Lord and Savior Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at 1:45 p.m., with his cherished family by his side. He will be remembered by his kindness, humility, and selflessness, and brought joy to all with whom he crossed paths.
Donald was born in Big Run, Pa. on July 11, 1934, the son of William Shirey and Virginia Shirey. He is survived by his wife, Virginia Ann Roenigk Shirey; children, Gina Shirey (Mateo Britez), Jonathan Shirey (Casey Shirey) and JoAnna Kozlina (Michael Kozlina). In addition, he is survived by his brother, George S. Shirey; and by 10 grandchildren, Corey Shirey, Laura Britez, Jacob Shirey, Jenna Halenda, Virginia Potts, Shane Kozlina, Sydney Shirey, Caleb Halenda, Emerson Halenda and Samuel Halenda.
After graduating as valedictorian from Smethport High School, Donald went to work at Kaul Clay. It was during that year of working outside in the winter that Donald decided he “had enough of that” and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. After boot camp, he was sent to the Korean War. The armistice was signed as his cruiser was entering the waters surrounding the Korean Peninsula. His time in the Navy allowed him to travel around the world, creating memories he cherished deeply. He stayed long enough in the U.S. Navy to earn the GI Bill. Using the GI Bill, he enrolled in Slippery Rock State College (now University), where he met the love of his life, Virginia Ann Roenigk. They married on July 21, 1962.
Donald’s first job postcollege was as a teacher at Knoch High School from 1961 to 1963. He continued his education at the University of Pittsburgh, where he earned his master’s degree and doctorate in information science in 1970.
He later became an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh in the field of information science until his retirement in December 1996. He also served as associate chairman of the library and Information sciences department. He was an excellent scholar in his field, contributing to numerous books throughout his career.
Donald led an active life in retirement, serving his community through volunteer work at the Freeport Meals on Wheels for 25 years. He enjoyed worship at Buffalo Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. Donald also kept up with his garden and attending his grandchildren’s events.
On behalf of Donald, his family wants to express their heartfelt appreciation to the Seasons in Saxonburg and Monarch Hospice for their professional, loving, compassionate care.
