ADAMS TWP — Twin Valley has made three straight appearances in the PIAA Class 2A girls lacrosse championship game.
Keeping the Raiders from moving one step closer to a fourth was going to take a certain level of play — one that proved just out of reach for Mars Tuesday afternoon.
Meredith Siever’s goal 78 seconds into overtime sent Twin Valley to Saturday’s quarterfinal round and the Planets home for the summer with an 11-10 decision.
“This was the third overtime game we’ve played this season and we haven’t lost,” Twin Valley coach Courtney Kaplan said. “We play tougher competition during the season to prepare us for this time of the year.”
Siever’s game-ender was just the fourth score after halftime for the Raiders. They dominated for much of the first half and were up 7-2 when Jenna Smith broke a 5-goal run for Twin Valley after she forced a turnover and scored for Mars with 26 seconds left before halftime.
It was the beginning of an 8-3 spurt the Planets used to tie the game at 10 by the end of regulation.
Hailey Long scored all three Planet goals in the fourth quarter, the equalizer coming with 32 seconds left.
“Twin Valley is a very good team, and they play a little more aggressively on defense than we are used to in the WPIAL,” Mars coach Abby Latona said. “It took us a while to switch things up and get back to possessing and getting shots off.
“Before overtime, I told the girls to do everything they could to win the draw. If they didn’t win it, play tough defense and get it back.”
Mars did not win the overtime draw, but withstood Twin Valley’s first shot, from Ellie Kaplan 45 seconds in. The Raiders got to the loose ball, however, and Siever found the net 33 seconds later.
Tess McGrath had four goals for the Planets, Anna McGrath and Lucy Balazs both scored once.
Kylie Duke scored five times for Twin Valley (18-4) and Kaplan added four scores.
“They’re our top two scorers,” Coach Kaplan said. “Ellie leads (Chester County) with 114 goals this season and Kylie has over 230 in her career.
“We had some injuries and players who were sick today. I’m proud of our girls for moving into bigger roles and getting the job done.”
Stephanie Dunbar stopped six shots for the Raiders. Ella Roach, a senior, had 12 saves for Mars.
Mars (19-2) won a third straight WPIAL title this season, but failed to reach the state quarterfinals for the first time in three years.
“We’re a young team and the future is so bright,” Latona said. “I’m glad they had a leader like Ella Roach. She was our backbone.”
