PIAA boys lacrosse: Mars too much for Lower Dauphin

ADAMS TWP — Cohen Pollock had a fine sophomore season for Lower Dauphin’s boys lacrosse team, but Mars made sure to end it on a sour note.

The Planets pelted the sophomore goalie with shot after shot, and while Pollock made 15 saves, Mars came away with the most important statistic — a 12-2 win Tuesday in a PIAA Class 2A first-round playoff at Mars Athletic Complex.

“We saw some film on them and knew the goalie was really good,” Mars coach Bob Marcoux said. “I thought he played well tonight, he faced a lot of shots.”

Ian Coulter, Logan Truitt and Grant Weaver each tallied three goals for Mars. Meanwhile, Planets goalie Luke Spreng was forced to make just two saves the entire game.

“We won faceoffs, and when we had to, cleared really well,” Marcoux said. “Possession is what this game’s all about.

“Logan, his nickname is ”Do It“ because he does it all for us. We can put him at any offensive position, midfield, attack ... we’re lucky to have him.”

Also scoring for Mars (19-2) was Ben Bowser twice and Jack Tirch.

The win advances the Planets to a quarterfinal Saturday against Allentown Central Catholic, which topped Bishop Shanahan by a single goal, at a site and time to be determined.

The road is sure to get rougher and a strong defense, led by Spreng, will go a long way in determining how far the Planets can go.

Other stalwarts include Jack Mueller, Hudson Choffel, Mike Duffy and Carter Yocum.

“We’ve focused on working as a unit and not making mistakes,” said Mars defensive coordinator Matt Grus. “Luke leads that group and we tell the guys not to worry about hitting home runs, just keep hitting singles.”

Lower Dauphin’s season ends with a record of 16-6.
