Mars New Year is an event that’s all our own

Mars is celebrating the Martian new year, signifying one revolution of the planet Mars around the sun, June 6 and 7, with an event that highlights the unique name for the Butler County borough.

A borough-wide festival that features a drone show, talks from NASA staff, a robotics showcase and an orchestra playing space-themed music, all for free, is something that would only happen in a borough that shares a name with the Red Planet. The Butler Eagle’s editorial staff appreciates this kind of commitment to the gag.

This type of event is elevated by the local schools, which have students participating in the robotics showcase and in the space-themed orchestra. The participation of students at an event like this emphasizes the whimsy that often comes along with learning about space as a child. It’s great that youths are getting involved in making a name for their home borough.

And the event likely won’t just be for the people of Mars — events taking place in the borough frequently attract a lot of visitors from out of town, some of them coming with the goal of saying they saw the UFO that sits in the borough’s center. Hopefully all of the locals involved in putting on some of the activities and entertainment are able to put their best foot forward and show that Mars isn’t just unique for its name, but for its people as well.

So hats off to the people of Mars who not only keep the Mars New Year celebration an annual occurrence, but make it a signature event that shows the borough is more than just a cool name.
