Mars senior gets appointment to Merchant Marine Academy
Dylan Weitzell, a senior at Mars Area High School, received an appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy, one of only five United States service academies.
According to a Mars news release, Weitzell received a nomination from Sen. John Fetterman, D-PA, and Rep. Mike Kelly, R-16.
Appointment to any of the service academies requires going through a rigorous process, which includes interviews and reviews of academic records, fitness assessments and a nomination from a member of Congress.
Dylan plans to graduate from the academy with a bachelor’s degree, a U.S. Coast Guard license and an officer’s commission in the armed forces. He plans to major in marine engineering with a goal of earning a commission into the U.S. Navy and pursuing a career in naval aviation, according to the Mars news release.
The Merchant Marine Academy is in Kings Point, N.Y.
