Butler man charged after threatening people with baseball bat

A Butler man was charged after reportedly banging on doors and threatening to kill people with a baseball bat.

John W. Mendicino, 57, was charged with two misdemeanor counts each of terroristic threats and simple assault, and one misdemeanor count each of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct following an incident Tuesday, May 27, in Butler.

Police said they were dispatched to the sixth floor of a South Cliff Street apartment building for reports of a man with a baseball bat banging on doors and threatening to kill people.

Police said they arrived on scene with a K-9 and were directed to a room where they knocked several times before a man eventually exited the apartment.

Police said the man faced officers in a threatening manner with clenched fists and teeth and would not obey commands. Police said the man was subsequently shocked with a Taser to no effect, so the K-9 was deployed and bit Mendicino on the upper left arm before he was taken into custody.

Police interviewed multiple neighbors after who expressed fear Mendicino would kill someone.

Mendicino is being held in Butler County Prison on a $50,000 bond. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. June 9 before District Judge William Fullerton.
