Neubert: As racing season nears summer heat, some local races to look forward to
Time rolls on.
We’ve barely recovered from spring marathons (or whatever fitness challenge you’ve met this season), and it’s summer. Two local races next weekend offer runners a variety of distances, terrains and surfaces to introduce summer competition or participation and benefit local youth.
On Saturday, May 31, Freeport Flash celebrates 20 years with its flat and fast 5K/10K on Butler-Freeport Community Trail at Monroe Road Trailhead. If you’ve run or walked the Butler-Freeport Community Trail, you may have noticed their start and turnaround signage along the scenic rail trail.
Because more than 200 participants are expected, parking at Buffalo Creek Nature Center will be limited. A shuttle bus will run from Freeport Senior High School on race day from 7:15-8:45 a.m. for the 9 a.m. start.
Online registration is open until midnight May 29 for individuals and teams. There’s also day-of registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the nature center. Or register for a virtual 5K or 10K and complete the course on your own time.
Both the 5K and 10K are out-and-back. Participation in the 5K is larger, but expect the field to be competitive for both distances with several high school cross country runners in attendance.
The post-race awards ceremony takes place at the nature center with fruit, water, pizza, pretzels and Gatorade. Awards for both races include top three overall men and women and age groups from 10-and-under through 50-plus. There are no awards for teams — just bragging rights.
Freeport Flash is a fundraiser for the Freeport High School and Middle School cross country teams. Funds raised pay for uniforms, entry fees to invitationals and a kids’ minicamp in June.

On Sunday, June 1, the seventh annual Run to Breathe Half Marathon offers runners a gentle, scenic summer run through Moraine State Park. The half marathon and 5K begin at McDanel’s Boat Launch for an out-and-back on the park’s paved bike trail.
Run to Breathe celebrates 10 years of support for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. The event, originally held in New Castle’s Cascade Park, is a benefit for kids with cystic fibrosis.
Due to park restrictions, there is a 350-person limit for the combined field of half marathon and 5K participants. Race director Herb Cratty said more than 250 have preregistered so far. Online registration ends at 6 p.m. May 30. Day of event registration and packet pickup begins at 7 a.m. with the half marathon start at 8:30. The 5K begins at 9 a.m.
Cratty said, unlike many half marathons, walkers are welcome. There’s no cut-off time, and people like the challenge of walking the distance. The course is also open to dogs on leashes and kids in strollers, though there is a short unpaved portion of trail near the boat launch area.
There are three water stops on the course, one at each distance’s turnaround point. Runners who need gels or electrolyte replacement drinks must bring their own.
A picnic and awards ceremony follows in Pavilion 7 with BBQ, hot dogs, pasta and fruit salad and more. Cratty said runners look forward to Tim Wu’s free flavored shaved ice, especially at warmer races. Shaved ice will also be on sale for spectators.
All registered runners will receive a shirt, coffee mug or Miles of Smiles running socks, and Cratty said all half marathoners will love the unique, colorful finisher medal. Competitive awards include trophies for first male and female overall and age group finishers in 10-year increments through 70-plus.
