Miller Minutes: ‘Rain or shine’ plans for Memorial Day weekend
The forecast for Memorial Day weekend does not look favorable, which may delay the ceremonial opening of pools and grill-christening cookouts you all had in mind.
While this may put a damper on your plans (see what I did there?) the good people of Butler County have ensured some of this weekend’s upcoming events are rain or shine.
Speaking of rain or shine, all of the parks in Butler County will be open this weekend. Obviously, it is not recommended you play outside in a lightning storm — that is dangerous. Despite popular belief, a lightning strike will not grant you super powers. So, if you find yourself at a loss and there is a break in the clouds, you can take advantage of the local flora and fauna at Moraine State Park, Jennings Environmental Education Center and many others.
All of this aside, there are quite a few opportunities for inside entertainment this weekend. Us theater people never rest our weary bones, and local vendors will be selling their wares in spades at various locations in the area. There also are several opportunities to get involved in the arts organizations around towns.
Have a good Memorial Day weekend everyone. I hope the following guide is helpful, as you make plans for this holiday. And, remember to reflect on the reason for our day off.
Butler Little Theatre’s final show of the season is sure to make you “Exit Laughing.” The play depicts a wild night for three ladies in a bridge group after they “borrow” their friend’s ashes from the funeral home. If you like “Golden Girls,” you’ll love this show, which runs again at 7:30 p.m. Thursday and at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at 1 Howard St. For tickets, times and more information, visit butlerlittletheatre.com.
Play glow disc golf at Alameda Park, 184 Alameda Park, Butler, on Friday night for $12. Players of all skill levels are able to register at bcpr.recdesk.com, and the course will be set up by the Purple Park. Check in starts at 8:45 p.m.
Shop local vendors in the historic Harmonist barn from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Haymaker Flea Market. The barn sits along Mercer Road near Seneca Drive, at 303 Mercer Road. For more information, visit experiencebutler.com.

Any person with a boat, kayak, canoe or other watercraft can attend the annual Blessing of the Fleet, which is being held by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary at 2 p.m. Saturday in Davis Hollow Marina at Moraine State Park. This is an event for “all the waters and those who travel them.” For more information, email Wes at officer64@aol.com.
Prospect’s annual Memorial Day event along the borough’s Main Street also will go to recognize the borough’s bicentennial. Children’s activities start at 3 p.m., the parade at 4 p.m. and fireworks at 8:30 p.m. This event may move to Sunday due to rain.
Cruise on down St. Conrad’s Church, 125 Buttercup Road, for a classic car show from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday night. There will be food, music and raffles. For more information, email questions to mensclub@allsaintsbutler.org.
Audition for Summer Dramatics Projects production of the musical “Grease” at 6 p.m. Sunday at Christ Community United Methodist Church, 205 N. Duffy Road. This production is open to people ages 10 to 25. Auditioners will be taught a song and dance; you do not need to prepare anything. Be punctual and mindful that call backs will be held Wednesday, May 28. More information can be found on the event Facebook page.
Memorial Day parades are planned in Butler, Chicora, Rimersburg and Saxonburg. Additionally, a ceremony is planned in Slippery Rock. See “Roundup: Butler County Memorial Day events” for more information.
