Voter turnout low to start Tuesday primaries
Polls in Butler County opened at 7 a.m. for the primary municipal election Tuesday, May 20, when groups of early risers went out to vote. But a county election official said the early rush at some precincts doesn’t translate to a higher turnout.
“So far, (the turnout) is about what we expected,” Chantell McCurdy, director of the Butler County Bureau of Elections, said.
McCurdy said turnout has been low for the precincts she had communicated with Tuesday morning, but the primary election always has a lower turnout than the general election.
She said polls would likely see more voters between the time they open at 7 until around 9 a.m.; between noon and 1 p.m. for lunch; and when most people leave work around 5 to 6 p.m.
One scanner needed to be replaced at a precinct in Cherry Valley, which McCurdy said was addressed before it affected any voters.
Polls close at 8 p.m.
