Butler receives new veterans banners

Volunteers and members of American Legion Post 117 hit Butler’s Main Street early Sunday, May 18, to hang up new veteran banners.

Post Commander Dave McLaughlin and Adjutant Dean Noechel, alongside volunteers Sam Sena and Mike Montag, began their work around 6 a.m. and continued into the morning. The team did not finish on Sunday, however, due to time constraints.

“The city installed new poles, which was a great asset to the banner program,” Noechel said. “We had to do some adjustments to the poles so they would accept the banners.”

The banners were last replaced in 2016, he said. Older banners used to adorn the streets of Butler, but were taken down in February in preparation for the new ones.

“It feels great to get those up. We wanted to have those banners up to honor our hometown heroes,” Noechel said.

He said the post has more banners to hang throughout the week and hopes to get as many up as possible before Memorial Day next Monday, May 26.

Banner orders will continue to be accepted and subsequently installed onto the poles. Each order comes with one street banner and two smaller versions for the family.

“We want to thank our community, and, of course, we want to thank our volunteers, Mike Montag and Sam Sena,” Noechel said. “It's nice to see new, fresh banners in town.”

Those who are looking to have a banner installed can fill out the necessary form at troopbanners.com/cityofbutler/, write a check for $110 made out to American Legion Post 117 Military Banner Tribute Program, and drop it off at Post 117 on South Main Street in Butler.

For banners paying tribute to veterans who were either killed or are missing in action, the $110 cost will be waived.
