District 9 track and field championships: Karns City’s Griffin Booher wins 800

BROOKVILLE — As he prepared to compete in the Class 2A boys 800-meter run Friday at the District 9 Track and Field Championships at Brookville High School, Griffin Booher’s performance here last year was weighing on him.

“I really thought I had a chance to make states (top two) and ended up placing third,” Karns City’s senior said. “That was definitely on my mind today. I had a mindset of winning.”

Booher turned his hope and expectation into reality, capturing his first district crown by running the event in two minutes, .38 seconds. He beat out runner-up Dalton Wenner of Cranberry by nearly a second and a half.

Booher’s time was not his best; he went 2:00.15 earlier this season, but now has the opportunity to top it as he will close his high school career at the state meet, scheduled next Friday and Saturday at Shippensburg University.

“I want to compete to the best of my ability, and hopefully get down to 1:59,” he said.

Like Booher, Moniteau senior Trent Beachem knew he had one final chance to reach states in an individual event — the 300 hurdles.

With his previous best time being 42.77, achieved at last week’s Redbank Invitational, Beachem shaved 1.51 seconds and finished second at 41.26.

Brookville’s Sam Krug won the event in 40.01. Beachem earned his trip to Shippensburg by finishing in well over a second ahead of Johnsonburg’s Mario Casilio.

“I was thinking about this being my last shot and that helped me,” Beachem said. “Our coach, Pat Rumbaugh, has been working with me. I have the speed in between hurdles, it’s just a matter of cleaning up my technique. Making states was the goal and now I just want to run my best time there.”

Union/A-C Valley’s Logan Skibinski placed third in the 100 dash, but his time of 11.08 met the PIAA standard to advance.

Following are results from the District 9 Class 2A Track and Field Championships, held Friday at Brookville High School. The top two in each event automatically qualified for the state meet. Athletes who qualified by meeting the PIAA standard are noted (*).
