High school roundup: Seneca Valley, Mars boys volleyball advance to WPIAL tournament semifinals

Jordan Hoover had 17 kills and four blocks, Abheek Nelikil 35 assists and Mario Ardolino 17 digs as the second-seeded Seneca Valley’s boys volleyball team downed No. 7 Canon-McMillan in straight sets to advance to the WPIAL Class 3A semifinals.

The scores of the 3-0 match were 25-13, 25-19 and 25-23. The Raiders will face off with No. 6 Penn-Trafford on Tuesday.

Mars 3, Seton LaSalle 2 — The sixth-seeded Planets defeated the No. 3 Rebels by scores of 18-25, 25-18, 26-28, 25-18 and 15-12 in a WPIAL Class 2A quarterfinal. Derek Piatek, Kyler Robinson, Will Supra and Cory Killian were outstanding performers in the upset win.

Mars will meet the winner of No. 2 Ambridge and No. 7 Thomas Jefferson in the semis Tuesday.

South Fayette 3, North Catholic 1 — The No. 4 Trojans’ season came to an end in the quarters. No stats were provided. The fifth-seeded Lions face No. 1 Shaler in the semis.

Non-playoff action

Slippery Rock softball 12, Oil City 2 (6 inn.) — Delaney Staab tripled, went 3-for-4, drove in two runs and scored two more as Slippery Rock pounded Oil City in the regular season finale. Joslyn Korcok went the distance in the circle, striking out seven. At the plate, she went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a double.
