WPIAL track and field: Seneca Valley’s Dakari Payne earns nap in winning high jump gold after tiring jump-off

SLIPPERY ROCK — Seneca Valley’s Dakari Payne had a busy day at Wednesday’s WPIAL Track and Field Individual Championships.

“I’m really tired. I’m probably about to go take a nap right now,” the Raiders junior said. “Tired and hot, so I’m about to wind down.”

Payne shook off a self-described lackluster showing in the 110-meter hurdles, in which he missed out on the finals, to get his time’s worth in the high jump. He emerge from a jump-off with gold at Slippery Rock University’s Mihalik-Thompson Stadium.

“Sixteen total jumps, first time that ever happened to me,” Payne said. “I was extremely tired right after, then I had to work down here and try to do long jump. I ended up placing seventh (21 feet, 3.5 inches). That was a surprise. I didn’t expect to do that. I PR’d over there. I finished off with triple jump, placed fifth (44-5.5) and that was also a surprise because I PR’d (again).”

Payne was vying for first-place in the high jump with North Allegheny’s Dylan Langdon.

As part of a four-way tie at 6-5, Payne had to try to get over the bar at 6-7 in a jump-off. No one could get over it there, and it was lowered gradually until it fell to 6-3, in which Payne and Langdon both made the cut.

Payne wound up taking the gold after clearing the bar where the four-competitor pack had started.

“I wanted it bad,” Payne said. “My motivation really was to make states. Since I did that and kept going. ... I believe the WPIAL champion at my school gets a plaque, so I was like, ‘Alright, I want the plaque now.’”

Gold medal and plaque acquired, he wanted only to get some rest.

“I’ll probably sleep in the tent, maybe on the field somewhere,” Payne said. “Wherever I can just lay down.”
