Black bear on the loose
Residents of Mushrush Road in Jefferson Township were not expecting a black bear to roam around their neighborhood.
Holly Mead, one of the residents, said while it is not the first bear she has seen in the area, it’s the first one she’s seen approach homes and yards in the neighborhood.
“We had one years ago near the Sheetz on Center Avenue, and maybe five years ago we saw one again in the same general vicinity, but this was the first time we had one near our house,” Mead said.
So far, the bear has been relatively calm and not threatened anyone, but has wandered its way up driveways and into gardens. It’s gotten into some bird feeders but not into anyone’s garbage.
“It was out yesterday around 3 (p.m.) when kids get dropped off from school. It’s gotta weigh around 200 pounds. It does not look very old but it’s still pretty big,” Mead said.
