High school roundup: North Catholic girls track and field finishes as WPIAL runner-up
North Catholic placed second in the WPIAL Class 2A girls track and field team championships Tuesday. The Trojanettes defeated Laurel 75-73 and Carlynton 75-65, but bowed to title-winner Quaker Valley 101-49.
No individual performances were available.
Karns City (girls) 98, Redbank Valley 52 — Sophia Bonetto (1,600-meter, 6:00.8), Brooke Rumbaugh (800, 3:16.6), Naomi Venesky (400, 1:05.5), and Miley Mooney (3,200, 4:46.1) all won singular track events for the Gremlins, who finished their KSAC gauntlet undefeated for the third straight.
Keystone (girls) 79.5, Moniteau 70.5 — Alexis Kirschner (300 hurdles, 50.19), Kellynn Potsubay (3,200, 16:47), Jessica Young (shot put), Bella Hernandez (javelin, 96-4), and Addison Krystek (triple jump, 31-7) won events for the Warriors.
Moniteau (boys) 80, Cranberry 70 — Trent Beachem (110 hurdles, 17.92; 300 hurdles, 45.29) and Peyton Beck (1,600, 5:06.17; 3,200, 11:25.04) were double individual winners for the Warriors.
Lily Vicari had three hits and came around three times to score and Shylee Karenbauer had a pair of hits, including a home run, as Butler beat Kiski Area 9-5.
The Golden Tornado finish their season 3-16.
North Catholic 18, Ambridge 1 — Clare Kotwica had a homer and five RBIs for the Trojanettes, while Kennedy Brown went 3-for-3 with a double and four runs driven in.
Natalia Rushak added a home run for North (8-7, 5-6 section).
Colton Christie and Jacob Jones both had a pair of hits, including a double and triple, respectively, as Karns City downed Union/A-C Valley 4-0.
Jones went the distance on the mound, as well, permitting three hits and striking out 12.
Seneca Valley 14, Brooke (W.Va.) 4 — Mason Fisher, Ryan Piekutoski, Quin Carney and Jaxten Plunkard all had two RBIs in the Raiders’ win at PNC Park.
Seneca Valley moves to 12-6.
Shaler 6, Mars 0 — Danny Murray had a pair of singles in the Planets’ shutout loss. Mars finishes the regular season 7-11 (3-7 section).
Katie Blake and Anna McGrath had four goals apiece as Mars beat Freeport 19-1. The Planets moved to 15-1 overall and 10-0 in WPIAL Section 2-2A action.
Shaler swept Mars by scores of 25-13, 25-15, and 25-20. No further details were provided.
