PennDOT reports near-record low highway fatalities for Pennsylvania in 2024

According to statistics released recently by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, traffic fatalities on Pennsylvania highways nearly reached an all-time low in 2024.

1,127 people lost their lives on Pennsylvania highways last year, the second-lowest total since record-keeping began in 1928, and a decrease of 82 from the year prior. In addition, the number of fatalities in impaired driver crashes dropped from 429 in 2023 to 342 in 2024, while fatalities in lane departure crashes dropped from 629 in 2023 to 537 in 2024.

Not all the news is positive, however, as there were increases in some types of crashes. Fatalities in intersection crashes rose from 301 in 2023 to 321 in 2024, while fatalities in crashes at stop intersections rose from 98 in 2023 to 111 in 2024.
