Man accused of three April burglaries in Butler

A Butler man is accused of three burglaries in April at a smoke shop and downtown center in Butler.

Michael James Smith Sr., 51, was charged with three felony counts each of burglary and breaking and entering, and three misdemeanor counts each of theft and receiving stolen property in two cases between April 8 and 21.

Police responded to a burglary April 8 at Supreme Smoke and Vape in Butler and found the storefront window shattered and a skill games coin machine broken into. Police said video footage showed a man in a green hooded jacket, blue jeans, gray shoes, a mask and glasses break the window and machine with a large silver wrench.

Police responded to the same store for a similar incident April 20 and found a side window broken before identifying Smith as the actor.

Police were dispatched to another incident the morning of April 21 at the Grapevine Center in Butler. Police said inside they found a broken back window and dirty footprints on the carpet leading out of an office room to an emergency exit.

Police said employees showed them footage of a man wearing the same outfit with the large silver wrench as seen in the smoke shop incidents. Employees told police they saw Smith acting frantic outside the center before it opened.

On April 21, an officer located Smith while on patrol and arrested him without incident. Police said Smith admitted to all three incidents in an interview — he said he stole $60, change and about nine vapes from the smoke shop, but the owners allege he stole around $900.

Police said Smith believed he stole about $9 from Grapevine Center, but employees said only a few dollar bills and some change were missing.

Police said Smith hid the wrench along a guardrail on College Street between a dumpster and a shed behind 7-Eleven.

Smith is being held in Butler County Prison on $25,000 and $20,000 bail. His preliminary hearings are scheduled for 11 a.m. Monday, May 5, before District Judge William Fullerton.
