David Schaffner Sr.

Schaffner

David Reid Schaffner Sr., 84, of Renfrew, peacefully passed away of natural causes at his home Thursday, May 1, 2025.

Born in Butler, he was a son of the late Thomas A. Schaffner and Beulah L. Morrow Schaffner.

Dave spent almost his entire life in the Renfrew and Meridian areas of Butler County, except for his four years of military service in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1958 to 1962, and a few years after that.

As a youth, he briefly attended St. Fidelis Seminary before graduating from Butler High School in 1958.

For most of his working years, he was a salesman for Calgon, Merck and Ecolab.

After he retired from the sales world, he worked as a chaplain for the VNA in their hospice program, visiting the sick and dying.

He was a member of St. Michael the Archangel Ukrainian Catholic Church in Butler. He was always an active member of the church in various capacities, starting as an altar server as a young boy. He also volunteered with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

He was a member of the American Legion.

Dave set the bar high, and by his example taught his family the importance of extending caring, kindness and comfort to those less fortunate. It wasn’t unusual at Schaffner family gatherings to have in attendance someone who’d had no place to go.

He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda Marlyn Smith Schaffner, whom he married Nov. 24, 1960; five children, Carol Hinchberger and her husband, Charlie, David Schaffner Jr. and his wife, Sue, Stephen Schaffner and his wife, Michele, Tony Schaffner and his wife, Tracy, and Joseph Rossmiller and his wife, Danielle; seven siblings, Bonita “Sis” Schaffner, Patricia Martin, Chrissy Motko, Bill Schaffner and his wife, Connie, Rebecca Mainwaring and her husband, Cliff, Jude Schaffner and his wife, Karen, and Francis McConnell and his wife, Sherwin; two sisters-in-law, Donna Schaffner and Charlene Schaffner; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Karen Schaffner; two brothers, Thomas Schaffner and Timothy Schaffner; and two brothers-in-law, William Martin and Paul Motko.

SCHAFFNER — Friends of David Reid Schaffner Sr., who died Thursday, May 1, 2025, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 4, at MARTIN FUNERAL HOME, DOWNTOWN, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler, (formerly Geibel Funeral Home).

Burial will take place in Calvary Cemetery.

Military honors will be accorded at the cemetery by Bantam Marine Detachment 743.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 146 N. Monroe St., Butler, PA 16001.
