Harry ‘Spike’ Gates Jr.
Harry “Spike” Gates Jr., a beloved husband, father, friend and longtime resident of Evans City, 82, passed away very peacefully Tuesday, April 29, 2025, at Good Samaritan Hospice at Wexford. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter and lifelong friendships.
Spike was born in his home in Finleyville on June 11, 1942, to the late Harry W. and Edna Mary (Neel) Gates. He was raised in Library, Pa., before settling in Evans City, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Spike was retired from Boilermakers Local 154. Spike was a man of simple pleasures and genuine joy. He had a knack for bringing people together, most notably through the card parties he regularly hosted for friends. His home often was filled with the sounds of laughter, friendly competition and the comforting hum of conversation.
An avid tinkerer, Spike had a deep love for old cars. He often could be found in his garage, sleeves rolled up, with a wrench in hand and a grin on his face, bringing life back to engines that others might have given up on. His love for the outdoors was equally strong. Gardening was a peaceful retreat for him, and he took great pride in the beauty he cultivated with his own two hands.
Spike’s warmth, curiosity and unwavering loyalty to those he loved will be missed more than words can express. He lived a life rooted in connection and kindness, and his memory will forever bloom in the hearts of all who knew him.
Spike leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife, Darla (McKeever) Gates; his daughters, Rayme Vogel and Tracy (Mitchell) Goldbach; his brother, William “Butch” Gates; his sisters, Gerry Wargo and Betty Lambert; his grandchildren, Kelcy, Tyler, Krysta, Lexy and Hailey; his great-grandchildren, Chasen, Penn, Peers, Patrick and Grace; his JoJo; his good friend, Bob; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law; and his nephews.
Spike was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.
