College roundup: Alexsa Hurd’s record-setting day propels Slippery Rock softball in to PSAC Tournament third round

Slippery Rock softball extended its surprise PSAC Tournament run with another upset win, this time over No. 18 Kutztown on Thursday.

The Rock beat the Golden Bears 5-4 to advance to Friday’s winners’ bracket third round against No. 11 East Stroudsburg at 10 a.m.; both teams are 2-0 in the double-elimination tournament.

Alexsa Hurd ripped a home run in the first inning to break the program’s record for most career hits with 187. She also fired six innings and struck out 11 to earn her SRU-record 40th career win.

Now 29-19, The Rock have tied their record for wins in a season. In their first-ever matchup with KU in the tournament, SRU also beat its first nationally ranked opponent in nine years.

Arielle Brown and Shaylyn Shall drove in two runs apiece, and Naomi Childs was 2-for-3 at the plate.

Grove City advances to second round

Tori Stevenson scored four goals to lead Grove City women’s lacrosse to a Presidents’ Athletic Conference Tournament first-round win Thursday night.

The Butler grad tied with two teammates (Jess Robinette and Gwen Shilling) with four markers in a 17-7 win over Westminster. Three of Stevenson’s goals came in the second half. Taylor Blythe had seven assists and a goal for the Wolverines.

Seneca Valley grad Elyse Kiggins had a save.

Grove City will face Chatham, which beat Washington & Jefferson 12-11, in Saturday’s PAC Championship.
