Man charged in theft, forgery of check from church

A Mercer County man is accused of washing a check from a church, changing the amount and redirecting more than $9,000 to himself, according to Butler Township police.

Macon Edward Dawson, 19, of Greenville, was charged with one felony count each of theft and access device fraud, and two misdemeanor forgery counts related to the incident around Oct. 10.

Police said the church sent a check around Oct. 10 to its waste management company for about $80. It was signed by the church president and treasurer and dropped off at a Lyndora post office.

Church leadership was notified Dec. 9 the check had been washed, the amount was changed to about $9,250 and made payable to Dawson as a “Thanksgiving donation.”

Police said the two signatures on the check did not match the original signatures, and someone attempted to deposit the check Nov. 18 at Mercer County Federal Credit Union in Sharon.

A federal credit union manager provided police with Dawson’s information and said he came in a couple times after the incident attempting to retrieve cash from the check.

Dawson’s preliminary hearing has not yet been scheduled.
