Grove City College to build $3 million baseball stadium after alumnus William C. Stewart
Grove City College announced plans Wednesday to name its future baseball stadium William C. Stewart Baseball Field.
The stadium will cost $3 million and is part of a campus improvements initiative that is looking to raise $185 million for increased scholarship funds and facilities improvements.
Stewart was a sophomore when the Wolverines’ baseball program returned in 1959. He played three years; his most memorable game, according to Grove City, was a 5-for-6 day against Slippery Rock in that first season when he hit a grand slam, triple, double and two singles.
He played on the same field Grove City uses today. Stewart Field will replace the current field and be positioned along Pinchalong Road. Grove City said it hopes to host community events and PIAA postseason games at the ballpark when it opens.
Among the Impact 150 improvement project plans are a $20 million field house for the football, mean’s lacrosse and tennis teams, and a separate indoor facility with a dome for intramural and varsity sports.
