College roundup: Brandon Butler hits for SRU baseball’s first cycle in 16 years; Rock softball wins PSAC opener
Sophomore third baseman Brandon Butler hit for the cycle in Slippery Rock baseball’s 13-9 win Tuesday against Point Park University.
Butler got the hardest part of the cycle out of the way in his first at-bat, hitting a standup triple to right-center field. He reached on a fielder’s choice in the second inning, hit a solo home run in the fourth inning and doubled to right-center in the sixth.
He hit his single in the seventh inning, becoming the first SRU player to hit for the cycle in 16 years. He finished 4-for-6 with three runs scored and two RBIs.
The Rock (30-15) earned their first 30-win season since 2022 as it contents for an NCAA Tournament berth.
The PSAC Tournament begins May 7.
The Rock softball team opened the PSAC Tournament with a 16-11 win over Bloomsburg on Wednesday. It’s the most runs scored in the conference tournament’s history.
SRU won just its second tournament game since 1983 and beat Bloomsburg for just the fourth time. Slippery Rock (28-19) will face No. 18 Kutztown on Thursday morning and is guaranteed at least two more games.
Aubrey Mansfield went 2-for-5 with four RBIs for The Rock, and Shaylyn Shall was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
