BC3 to induct 3 new members into sports hall of fame, including Karns City graduate
Butler County Community College will induct three new members into its sports hall of fame Saturday.
The Pioneers will welcome Mackenzie Craig, Matthew Lobaugh and Michael Schmidt into the Charles W. Dunaway Pioneer Hall of Fame during a ceremony at 1 p.m. in the BC3 Field House.
The trio will give the hall 25 members.
Craig, a 2017 graduate of Karns City, scored 1,277 points and grabbed 966 rebounds for the women’s basketball team before graduating from BC3 in 2019 with a degree in criminology. She was also a standout volleyball player, becoming the first Pioneer to be named National Junior College Athletic Association All-American in two sports, when she received one for volleyball in 2018 and basketball a year later.
“I played on that court,” Craig said in a news release from BC3. “I never thought in a million years I would have my face on that wall.”
Lobaugh served in the U.S. Army Reserve during Operation Iraqi Freedom. When he returned home in 2004, he joined BC3’s men’s basketball team and scored 1,088 points in two years, earned NJCAA All-American honors and led the Pioneers to their first winning season in eight years.
“I had just gotten back from overseas, and I did not know what I wanted to do with my life,” Lobaugh said in a statement. “I knew I wanted to go to college and this was a great opportunity to keep me busy and to play a sport I loved and keep my grades up.”
Schmidt was captain of BC3’s baseball and men’s basketball teams in the 1970s, when he was named All-Skyline Athletic Conference in both sports and set program basketball records for career rebounds (334), single-season rebounds (170) and was fourth on the all-time scoring list with 566 points upon graduation. He batted .385 as the starting catcher in 1978.
“It’s an honor to be mentioned with that group,” Schmidt said in BC3’s news release.
BC3 will also recognize Troy Loughry, Johnna Hill and Josie Russo, who were named NJCAA All-Americans in 2023 and 2024.
