Sons of American Legion deliver gifts to VA
The Sons of the American Legion Post 117 delivered a trailer of gifts to residents at the Butler VA’s community living center Dec. 10.
Bill Scheibel, commander of the Sons of the Legion Post 117, said the group has made sure to work with the Sergeant Joseph George Kusick VA Community Living Center in Butler Township to get items to the veterans living there.
“The American Legion Post 117 has been doing this for quite a few years. This year, we took care of 60 male veterans and three female veterans. And we try to get them things that they need,” Scheibel said.
This year, the Sons of the American Legion dropped off comfortable clothing like zip-down sweatshirts, slippers and socks, as well as some personal hygiene items.
One reason why Scheibel and others enjoy being able to deliver the gifts is to get the chance to visit with residents who may not have many family members and interact with them.
This year, the gift-givers from the Sons of the Legion were only able to deliver presents to the lobby of the community living center. In the past, they’ve been able to go door-to-door delivering the gifts.
“When we first started this, we used to go around and deliver packages to each one of the veterans, and it was really cool because when we were doing it, they would explain what they did when they were in the service, and some of these guys were in World War II, and you hear all kind of stuff, like I’m coming out of there with tears in my eye.”
