A 32-year-old Butler man was charged with 64 counts after being arrested for various sex crimes that occurred in April 2023.

Gary Paul McCarl Sr. was charged by the Butler Township Police Department on Tuesday, Dec. 3 after the arresting officer received an anonymous tip in April that McCarl was exchanging nude photos with a 14-year-old female in Butler Township, according to an affidavit of probable cause.

When Butler Township police interviewed the 14-year-old days later, she told officers she met McCarl at the Butler Carved in Ice Festival in February, and described him as a family friend. Within the next two days, McCarl began hanging out at her house.

McCarl used Snapchat and other social media platforms to tell her he loved her, send her sexually inappropriate pictures and videos performing sexual acts on himself, according to the affidavit.

When the teenager allowed police officers to go through her Snapchat conversations, pictures McCarl sent her with his face in the background identified him as the perpetrator. In the affidavit, the officer also said he saw pictures of a ring in the conversations, as McCarl proposed to her.

The conversations lasted from February 2023 until the day of the interview.

On April 27, 2023, District Judge Kevin O’Donnell approved a search warrant for a Snapchat username requesting IP address information from the app. The IP address information was provided May 3, and the account was linked to more pornographic pictures and videos sent by McCarl.

On May 30, 2023, search warrant results were received regarding the location of the IP address, linking it to McCarl’s home address in Butler.

McCarl is charged with 21 felony counts of unlawful contact with a minor involving obscene and other sexual materials and performances. He also is charged with 22 felony counts of disseminating explicit sexual material to a minor, a single felony count of corruption of a minor and 20 misdemeanor counts of lewd and threatening communications.

He is in Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bail. His preliminary heading is scheduled for Dec. 19 before District Judge Kevin O’Donnell.
