Marker would recognize importance of July 13

On Wednesday, Dec. 4, supervisors in Connoquenessing Township started a discussion about a possible marker to be placed near the site of the July 13 attempted assassination of President-elect Donald Trump at the Butler Farm Show grounds.

The township was approached by a nonprofit that offered to give the marker to the municipality. Just what the marker would say, along with where it would go are still open questions.

That’s one reason it makes sense for the supervisors to spend the next several weeks collecting more information about the proposed marker.

The events of July 13, when Trump’s ear was grazed by a shooter’s bullet, two spectators were seriously wounded and one was killed, put Butler County in the national spotlight. It makes sense to have some kind of marker to commemorate the day.

But questions about where is the most appropriate place, along with what, exactly, the marker should say are worth answering before accepting any marker, whether there’s a cost associated with it or not.

During a public comment period at Wednesday’s meeting, Butler Farm Show president Ken Laughlin said there was no chance the marker would go on the grounds.

“I can assure you it won’t be on farm show property,” Laughlin said.

The location and the messaging are important things to finalize before installing any marker. We wish the supervisors luck in making those decisions.
