DNA used to solve 2023 catalytic converter thefts in Oakland Township
State police say they were able to identify and arrest a Butler man for allegedly stealing two catalytic converters from a local body shop by using blood left at the scene.
Adam M. Spinner, 35, of Butler, was arraigned Nov. 21 and charged with two misdemeanor counts of theft and criminal mischief related to a March 5, 2023 robbery at Randy and Bob’s Auto Body in Oakland Township.
According to the criminal complaint filed recently, on March 8, 2023, a Randy and Bob’s employee noticed an odd sound coming from a Honda CR-V that was in for service. Once on a lift, owner Randy Miller confirmed the sound stemmed from a missing catalytic converter. Miller also noted a “reddish brown liquid” that appeared to be blood located on both the SUV’s frame and tailpipe.
Upon inspection of other vehicles housed in the semi-secure parking lot, a catalytic converter was also found to be missing from a Toyota Tacoma.
Miller reviewed footage captured by security cameras overlooking the lot and was able to see lights coming from underneath the two vehicles at 1:20 a.m. the morning of March 5.
The incident was reported to law enforcement and a state police forensic services unit was called to the scene to assist in the investigation, by collecting evidence including samples of the liquid found on the undercarriage of the Honda, police said.
Testing showed the liquid was blood and a DNA profile was uploaded to the Combined Index System. After a search, the DNA profile was matched to Spinner.
Spinner is being held in Butler County Prison. A preliminary hearing will be held on Dec. 3 in Chicora before District Judge Lewis Stoughton.
