HS roundup: Butler XC teams sweep North Hills, Mars

Butler’s Madison McGarrah, Zari Golojuh and Makayla McLister earned the top three places overall as the Golden Tornado girls cross country team defeated North Hills (18-40) and Mars (15-50) on Tuesday at North Park.

McGarrah, a senior, paced the field with a time of 21:26.7. Macie McLister placed fifth to aid the sweep for Butler.

In the boys competition, Butler’s Zach Slear won with a finish in 17:23.18. Logan Rogers (2nd), Ethan Thomas (4th) and Brendan Eicher (5th) helped the Tornado to wins over the Indians (22-33) and Planets (15-44).

Grove City 15, Slippery Rock 50; Grove City 26, Slippery Rock 31 (girls) — For the Rocket girls, Leah Perez was runner-up with a time of 22:14. Rebecca Springirth was third and Raely FaJohn took fifth.

Hunter Doerflinger paced Slippery Rock’s boys with a 9th-place finish.

Girls volleyball

Mars was strong at the net, with Cecilia Christy dropping 15 kills and Rylee Wooldridge adding nine as the Planets swept Valley by scores of 25-4, 25-14 and 25-11.

Kate Southwell contributed four kills and four aces to the win.

Slippery Rock 3, Greenville 0 — Marissa Metzka tallied 12 kills and Zoey Pankratz 17 assists in the Rockets’ 25-18, 25-14, 25-20 sweep of the host Trojans.

Lexi Plesakov added 12 digs and Lyla Runtas seven digs for the Rockets.

Clarion-Limestone 3, Moniteau 0 — The Lions downed the Warriors by scores of 25-20, 25-11 and 25-12.

Bella Hernandez had five kills for Moniteau.

North Catholic 3, Butler 2 — Audrey Lehman contributed 14 kills and 10 digs to Butler’s effort. Channing Popovich added 11 kills and three blocks.

The Tornado also received strong performances out of Raina Lewandowski (nine kills), Sarah Lucas (19 digs), Julia Mason (37 assists, 19 digs) and Brynn Cornibe (six kills).

North Catholic stats were not reported.

Keystone 3, A-C Valley 0 — Maddy Dehart had five kills and Nichole Wingard five assists and six digs for the Falcons.

Hampton 3, Knoch 0 — The Talbots claimed this match by scores of 25-9, 25-15 and 25-13.

Boys golf

Tyler Garvin’s 36 led Seneca Valley to a 192-222 win against Knoch at Cranberry Highlands. Marcos Lopez added a 38 while teammates Brody Pirt and Josh Marquardt both carded a 39.

Jeremy Scheidt fired a 40 for Knoch.

Freeport 194, St. Joseph 230 — The Yellowjackets remained unbeaten in Section 1-2A play, with Ethan Crooks carding a 37 at River Forest Country Club.

Cam Zigo, Stephen Evans and Carson Kane each came in with a 38 for Freeport (14-2, 12-0).

KSAC — In the final Mega Match of the season, A-C Valley/Union’s Joe Rapp had a 39 at Wanango Country Club to place runner-up to Clarion’s Kam Kerle (36).

The Falcon Knights also received a 41 from Hudson Bliss.

Moniteau’s Connor Ealy shot 41, Karns City’s Joey O'Donnell a 43.

Boys Soccer

Mars improved to 6-1-2 and 4-1-1 in section play with a 2-0 defeat of Knoch.

Sean Scanlon and Nick Butler scored goals for the Planets. Eli Stasiowski earned the shutout in net.
