Dr. David L. Anderson, 76, of Butler, formerly of Turtle Creek, Pa., passed away on Sunday, July 21, 2024.

David was the father of Melissa (Sean) Salsgiver of Glen Campbell, Pa. His son, Daniel (Madeline) Anderson, granddaughters, Gwendolyn and Violet Anderson, and his first wife, Linda Anderson, all reside in Gibsonia. David had two brothers, Daniel (Sandi) of Egg Harbor, N.J., and Dale (Cindy Miglino) of Rocklin, Calif.; and two sisters, Jennifer Jill (Dave Williams) of Ashburnham, Mass., and Nancy of Lower Burrell, Pa. He was uncle to niece, Taylor Rae Arsenault, and three nephews, Dominic and Eric Bevilacqua and Kyle (Kate) Anderson and their daughter, Eleanor. Also surviving are companion, Marsha Pauli; and his former wife, Renee Anderson. David also leaves two “furry appliances,” his feline friends, Lily and Shelby — yes, after Caroll!

David developed a love for reading as a kid while confined to bed, recovering from nearly every common childhood illness, one after the other. He went on adventures through his books. David was a tenured English professor at Butler County Community College for more than 30 years, driving to campus in a Mustang, wearing a Stetson hat, jeans and a tweed blazer — classic professor attire. His classes included English and English literature, American literature, Shakespeare, classical mythology and detective fiction.

After retiring, David was managing editor of the August Wilson Journal and published a book, “Archetypal Figures in ‘The Snows of Kilimanjaro’: Hemingway on Flight and Hospitality.” His book is the first full-length book published on this short story by Ernest Hemingway. David’s master’s thesis at California University of Pennsylvania was on Hemingway. His doctoral dissertation at Carnegie Mellon University included authors such as Jack London — the other half of the archetype discussed in David’s book in which he compares an incident in “The Snows of Kilimanjaro” to one in a Jack London story. As a member of The Hemingway Society and with numerous submissions published in The Hemingway Review, David often presented at Hemingway conferences, even traveling to Venice and Paris to present.

David was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Eleanor (Poppick) Anderson; his Aunt Irene “Renie” Poppick, with whom he had a special bond; several aunts and uncles; “the best dog,” Flash; and beloved cat, Graymalkin.

ANDERSON — Friends of Dr. David L. Anderson, who died Sunday, July 21, 2024, will be received from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at SCHELLHAAS FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 5864 Heckert Road, Bakerstown.
