Josephine Margaret (Ritzert) Doerr, of Odenton, Md., formerly of Cabot, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at the age of 93.

She was born on Oct. 20, 1930, in Donegal Township, Chicora. She was the daughter of Florian H. and Della M. (Bowser) Ritzert.

She married Herbert Louis Doerr Sr. on Oct. 18, 1950, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in North Oakland, Pa. She attended a one-room schoolhouse on Game Reserve Road in Chicora. Josephine worked at Moonlight Mushrooms Inc., West Winfield, Pa., as a harvester/picker. She stayed home briefly to raise her children. Later, she also worked as a clerk at Brinker’s TV & Groceries and also at Dottie’s Market, both in Cabot.

In her retirement years, she moved to Maryland to assist in the care of two of her grandchildren. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Fields Catholic Church in Millersville, Md., and was formerly a parishioner of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cabot, where she was a member of the Christian Mothers.

Josephine was affectionately known as Mom, Jo, Josie, Aunt Jo, Grandma, and Grandma Great. She enjoyed spending time with her family, doing word find puzzles and jigsaw puzzles, coloring, listening to Bluegrass and country music, gardening, canning, taking care of her grandchildren and praying for others. She was selfless and always put God, her family and friends before herself.

She is survived by her sister, Theresa Bickel of Hamilton, Ohio; son, Dennis (Cathy) Doerr of Lyndora; daughter, Denise (Kevin) Woodring of Odenton, Md., with whom she made her home; grandchildren, Ryan Doerr of Lyndora, Breyanna Rundell of Butler, Desirée (William) Hilger of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Jacob Woodring of Odenton, Md.; and great-grandchildren, Christian Everett Oldham, Nyra Mae Rundell, Josie Catherine Doerr, Esther Josephine “Essie Jo” Hilger and Elizabeth Mae “Ellie Mae” Hilger.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Herbert Louis Doerr Sr.; son, Herbert Louis Doerr Jr.; her parents; seven brothers; five sisters; and many other godchildren and relatives.

DOERR — Friends and family of Josephine Margaret (Ritzert) Doerr, who died Wednesday, June 12, 2024, will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at SPENCER D. GEIBEL FUNERAL HOME & CREMATION SERVICES, 140 New Castle Road, Butler. The Rosary will be prayed during the evening viewing. A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis of Assisi Parish, St. Joseph Roman Catholic Church, 315 Stoney Hollow Road, Cabot. Burial will follow in St. Mary Roman Catholic Cemetery of Herman.
