AHN exploring options for Butler’s cancer institute space

Allegheny Health Network is exploring options for the Butler cancer institute’s radiation oncology department, which is scheduled to move June 30, according to a communications representative.

After June 30, area patients who require radiation therapy treatment as a part of their cancer care regimen will be directed to nearby AHN cancer facilities, including the Wexford Health & Wellness Pavilion, AHN Allegheny Valley Hospital or AHN Allegheny General Hospital.

Dan Laurent, vice president of corporate communications for AHN, said the facility will continue to offer medical oncology services, including chemo/infusion therapy, nutritional counseling and social services support for cancer patients.

Laurent said the facility also will provide patient radiation oncology consultations and follow-ups at the facility and could include the introduction of new services based on the needs of patients.

According to Laurent, the facility will offer a weekly clinic where patients can meet with radiation oncologists to plan treatment, and then see radiation oncologists on site for follow-up appointments at the clinic.

AHN employees from the radiation oncology program at the Butler site will have the opportunity to work at other AHN cancer centers, Laurent said.

Additionally, Laurent emphasized that patients who are in the course of radiation therapy at the Butler facility should experience no disruption in their care.

“We will be making the transitions as seamless as possible for everyone,” Laurent said in an email Thursday, June 13.
