Ronald Shakely
Ronald H. Shakely, 97, of Evans City, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at his home, surrounded by his family.
“Shake” was born in Evans City, son of Loyal J. and Helen Hoffman Shakely. He was the beloved husband of 59 years to the late Jane Leese Shakely until her death in 2009.
Upon graduating Evans City High School in 1944, he went directly into the Army Specialized Training Program, through which he attended Virginia Military Institute and Penn State. He reenlisted in November 1945 to join the 360th ASFB (Army Service Forces Band) at McCormack General Hospital in Pasadena for one year.
He returned to Penn State to earn a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering. He later went on to earn his law degree at Duquesne University. He was employed by Mine Safety Appliance Co. for 42 years, as a chemical engineer and attorney, retiring as corporate patent council in 1991.
Ron was an active member and elder of the Westminster United Presbyterian Church of Evans City and an old-time member of the Butler County Kennel Club. He and his late wife, Jane, had a busy life, spending 40 years raising, breeding and showing first German shepherds and then Pembroke Welsh corgis.
They volunteered for Meals on Wheels, the Evans City Food Cupboard, and enjoyed gardening, traveling and spending time with family in his retirement years, with enough time left to enjoy golfing and poker.
He is survived by three children, Anne Harrison (Rich) of Penn Township, Thomas Shakely of Florida and Andrew Shakely of New Hampshire; two grandchildren, Ryan Shakely (Jess) and Janelle Meck (Ben); and six great-grandchildren, Evelyn, Katherine and Sophia Shakely and Logan, Abigail and Caleb Meck.
The family would like to thank the Good Samaritan Hospice team for their thoughtful and professional care.
