Charges dismissed against man who pointed gun at woman in Butler

Charges against a man accused of pointing a handgun at a woman twice at her Butler apartment were dismissed during a preliminary hearing Monday, May 6.

Donald W. Reese, 26, was facing charges of felony aggravated assault and misdemeanors terroristic threats, simple assault and reckless endangerment filed by Butler police April 1.

Due to the absence of the witness and arresting officer, District Judge William Fullerton granted the request for dismissal made by public defender Kolten Hilterman.

It is alleged that on March 31 Reese went to a woman’s apartment and pointed a gun at her face following an interaction. The two later had a discussion, and Reese left the apartment, according to documents.

Reese later returned with the weapon and pointed it at the woman while in a physical altercation with someone outside the apartment, police said.

Reese was charged for another incident involving a firearm on April 4 in Allegheny County, during which he pointed a gun at a police officer and a juvenile.

According to a release from Allegheny County police, Reese pointed a handgun at an officer as they attempted to detain another individual in Stowe Township. Reese then ran from police, documents showed.

During the course of the investigation, detectives learned Reese approached a juvenile in the woods who was returning home from football practice and held him at gunpoint.

Police said the juvenile was forced to take Reese to his residence, and Reese attempted to make phone calls. Police said Reese also ordered the juvenile to climb through the window of the residence multiple times to provide him with a change of clothes.

In that case, Reese was charged with felonies robbery, flight to avoid apprehension, aggravated assault, unlawful restraint, false imprisonment, possession of a prohibited firearm, kidnapping to facilitate a felony, kidnapping a minor, carrying a firearm without a license, and misdemeanors simple assault, theft, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.

Those charges were held for court following a preliminary hearing April 16 before District Judge Bruce Boni in Allegheny County.
