Summer activities planned

EDCO Park offers fun for young, old

EVANS CITY — A full slate of summer activities for youngsters and seniors are being planned by the park authority.

Cindy Caldwell of the EDCO Park Authority said three weeklong camps have been coordinated for school-aged children, and Tuesday Socials in the Park are free for preschoolers.

Caldwell said the cost for each summer camp is $100, and $90 for each sibling who registers. A $5 early bird discount applies to campers who register by June 1. The camps run from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The camps are Crazy Ball Camp, from June 10 to 14, which will feature unique games played with various types of balls in the park and pool; Competition Week, from July 8 to 12, which will see campers participate in a bike rodeo, water Olympics and a goofy camp triathlon; and Nature Camp, from Aug. 12 to 16, which will include experiments, exploring and a wrap-up with a family campfire at the park.

All three camps will include activities in the park as well as the pool.

A camp being offered to those age 12 and older is Counselor in Training. Caldwell explained that youngsters interested in learning to mentor younger children will attend the other three camps to help out with activities while learning leadership and mentoring skills.

Cost for the Counselor in Training Camp is $70 per camper, and each candidate must fill out an application. Caldwell said space is limited, and each Counselor in Training camper will receive a certificate of participation.

She said senior citizens and preschoolers can enjoy free activities in the park each Tuesday.

Tot Story Time will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesdays between May 28 and Aug. 20. Preschoolers will hear a story and participate in an activity or craft that correlates to the story.

“Last year, we had about 10 kids each week, so it was a nice startup,” Caldwell said.

Seniors can come to the small pavilion at EDCO Park from 1 to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays to play cards and games.

Caldwell said all activities will proceed rain or shine.

She credited EDCO program manager Bonnie Gross with coordinating the events with residents’ best interests in mind.

“It’s an awesome opportunity for the community to come together,” she said. “For the kids, it’s not only fun, but there’s always a hidden lesson, too.”
