Scout gets OK to build octagonal picnic table for Preston Park

BUTLER TWP — Township commissioners approved a request from Anthony Stoops Monday, April 15, to build and install an octagonal table at Preston Park.

Stoops, a 10th-grade student at Butler Senior High School and a Scout in Troop 6, said he wants to place the octagonal picnic table within the “Druid Circle” at the park, which is a grassy space north of the arboretum. Stoops said Monday in addition to the park being a significant location for him and his family, he wants to build a table with eight sides because “eight trips around the Druid Circle equals 1 mile.”

“My family has been going to Preston Park for walks, picnics and fishing; as a Scout, I have done many walks and geocaching,” Stoops said. “I would be happy to make this table for the park because I know it would be a great place for people to sit while they are visiting the park, having a picnic or learning about nature.”

Stoops plans to raise money on his own to build the table, and said he hopes to install it by early June.

Civil service post

Commissioners also voted to appoint county Sheriff Mike Slupe to the township’s civil service commission for a six-year term.

Anthony Stagno’s term on the commission recently expired, according to township manager Tom Knights, so the commission needed a replacement as soon as possible.

The commission, which regulates civil service employment matters within the township, also needs alternates, Knights said. Slupe formerly was an alternate for the commission, according to the township’s website.

“We actually have two alternate positions open,” Knights said. “Those are six-year terms.”
