CLAY TWP — One person was transported to a local hospital following a head-on collision Sunday afternoon, April 14 on William Flynn Highway (Route 8) in Clay Township.

The incident involved a white Jeep and a silver Ford Focus. Both vehicles sustained heavy front-end damage, and the Ford wound up in a ditch. Only two occupants, the drivers of each vehicle, were involved.

While one occupant was transported to Butler Memorial Hospital, the other refused transport.

According to Lieutenant Andy Hoehn of the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, the collision occurred when one vehicle veered into the path of the other on the two-lane street.

“From what I'm told, it was a cross-traffic accident,” Hoehn said. “They were on the highway, and they crossed over into the other lane. I don’t know which one did which.”

In addition to the Unionville Volunteer Fire Department, the West Sunbury Fire Department and Butler Ambulance Service responded to the scene.

The incident led to slowdowns on William Flynn Highway, as traffic was reduced to one lane and controlled by flaggers.

“I've got firemen on both sides controlling traffic,” Lt. Hoehn said. “And we’re just doing some fluid cleanup.”

The accident occurred just across from the Muddy Creek Animal Clinic. Barb Karner, a veterinarian at the clinic, was an eyewitness and aided the injured driver out of his vehicle.

“They were already stopped by the time I got out here, but I heard a very large noise,” Karner said. “The lady was already getting out of her car. The young man was a little stunned and there was smoke coming, so we got him out of the car fairly quickly.”

According to scanner reports, the incident was cleared by 12:30 p.m.
