Great Butler Bake Off coming to art center and gallery

Visitors of the Butler Art Center & Gallery can normally feast their eyes on art from paintings, sculptures, photography and more, but an upcoming event at the center will give visitors a literal feast.

Courtney McNamara, marketing director for the gallery, said there are still contestant spots open for the first Great Butler Bake Off, scheduled to take place from 1 to 3 p.m. April 20. She said people who have seen the British television series, “Great British Bake Off,” will likely enjoy the art center’s incorporation of the show’s motifs into the April 20 event.

“The plan is to incorporate the British theme into the show itself,” McNamara said. “We're encouraging spectators and people to dress in their finest attire.”

The great Butler Bake Off is limited to amateur bakers, just like the British show, but it will focus specifically on cake baking. Cakes will be judged by local sweet connoisseurs on design, taste and originality, and spectators who buy tickets to the event will get to taste each one as well.

McNamara said the bakers won’t create their cakes on site, which is what happens in the British show, but she and another emcee will provide commentary during the tasting portion of the event.

“People are going to bring in their cakes already, but it will be similar to the show,” McNamara said. “We'll be in character as British hosts, then the judges will judge each cake one at a time.”

Winners chosen by the judges will receive trophies, and McNamara said there are also going to be gift baskets available at the show.

McNamara also said the art center has been organizing more live entertainment events, including its murder mystery dinners, have been getting good attendance.

“We just thought it would be fun to ... incorporate a different kind of art at the center,” McNamara said.

To enter the Great Butler Bake Off, or buy spectator tickets, visit the Butler Art Center’s website at butlerartcenterandgallery.org. The entry fee for bakers is $35, and admission for spectators is $7.
