History made during neighborhood get-together on track
SLIPPERY ROCK — Just a neighborhood get-together — with a little history tossed in.
The fourth annual Butler County Track and Field Classic took place Saturday at Troy-Alan Stadium on the campus of Slippery Rock High School. Despite chilly and blustery conditions, there were 13 meet records broken, a three-time winner and a first in PIAA history.
Senior Alex Brown of North Catholic and Kristofer Robinson of Knoch competed in the 100 and 200-meter wheelchair events — making the County Classic the first high school meet in state history to have multiple wheelchair competitors on the track.
Brown and Robinson both broke meet records in both events.
“It feels good to make history,” said Brown, who had been the only wheelchair competitor in County Classic history. “I reached out to a few wheelchair athletes to give this a try today and Kristofer was the only one who could make it.”
Kristofer, a sophomore, had never raced a wheelchair on a track before Saturday.
“It was fun. I’ll definitely do it again,” he said. “Alex and I play floor hockey together and we’re good friends.”
“He never tried this before and he completes the 100 in under 20 seconds,” Brown said, shaking his head. “That’s the kind of athlete he is.”
Kristofer won the 100 meters while Brown beat him to the finish line in the 200.
“Since I’m a senior and he’s a sophomore, Kristofer can carry on for us now,” Brown said. “We’re still working on getting more competitors in these events. A wheelchair (to race in) cost $6,000 and a lot of people can’t afford that.
“We’re trying to come up with fundraisers and ways to make those chairs accessible. No one will know if they can do this unless they try and we have to make those chairs accessible so they’ll try it.”
Slippery Rock had not competed in a track meet this season until Saturday, but Levi Prementine won three events regardless. He snapped his own meet record in the 110-hurdles by running the event in 14.83 seconds. He claimed the 300 hurdles and long jump as well.
“I just figured I’d come out and get a feel for things,” said Prementine, the defending PIAA 300-meter hurdle champion. “Then the races start and you just compete. Running a 14.8 in my first meet of the year, I’m very happy with that.”
Grove City’s DeLathian Boanes and Milena Sciullo were the only other athletes in the meet to win more than one event. He claimed the boys shot put and discus, she won the high jump and triple jump.
The most competitive race of the day was the girls 800 meters. Butler’s Madison MxcGarrah won the event in a meet record 2 minutes, 22.61 seconds. But three other runners in the race broke the previous mark of 2:28.05 as well.
North Catholic’s Grace Lazzara was second in 2:24.09, Seneca Valley’s Sydney Heltzell third in 2:25.48 and Grove City’s Josie Jones fourth in 2:26.52.
“That race was awesome,” McGarrah said. “Having so many runners from neighboring schools out there on the track pushing each other ... That was awesome, too.”
Lazzara held the previous meet record in the 800. She won the 1,600 meters earlier in the day, breaking her own previous meet record by running the event in 5:16.52.
“This is a great meet to see where you’re at,” Lazzara said. “It gives you a taste of the bigger meets coming up. It’s fun running against girls from schools so close by.”
Butler’s Ava Brewster had the most impressive win of the day, taking the girls 3,200 by a whopping 41 seconds over runner-up Alyssa Urling of North Catholc. Brewster set a meet record in the event with a time of 11 minutes, 38.77 seconds.
“It’s tough to post a really good time when you’re out there running by yourself like that,” Brewster said. “There was nobody pushing me and the wind I’d hit every time around the far bend was definitely not my friend. I felt like I wasn’t even moving.
“But you do what you can with what you have today.”
Freeport’s Michael Braun led the boys 1,600 from wire to wire. He is the defending WPIAL 3,200-meter champion.
“This was a good start,” he said. “I want to knock my 1,600 time down from 4:23 to 4:15, my 3,200 time from 9:23 to 9:05. Now I know where I’m at.“
Four field event meet records were broken Saturday: Grove City’s Sciullo with a 5-6 in the girls high jump, North Catholic’s Daphne Flerl with a 17-02 in the long jump, Butler’s Aubrey Rock abnd Freeport’s Mackenzie Magness with 11-0 in the pole vault; Butler’s Orein McBride-Cager and Seneca Vallery’s Kyle Mancing with 6-2 in the boys high jump.
