Helen McLafferty

McLafferty

Helen Joanna McLafferty, 91, of Saxonburg, passed away on Friday, March 22, 2024, at her home, surrounded by her family.

Born Oct. 16, 1932 in Saxonburg, she was the daughter of Martin Henry Fisher and Anna E. Greer Fisher.

Helen was a picker at Moonlite Mushroom and was a cafeteria lady at Jefferson Elementary and Saxonburg Elementary schools for many years. She was baptized and a lifetime member at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Saxonburg, where she was a greeter, served on the Altar Guild and was a Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed landscaping at the church and did anything where she saw a need. Helen was a caregiver to anyone in need, and a babysitter to many Saxonburg area children.

Helen and her husband, Jim, volunteered for Meals on Wheels for many years. She was very family-oriented and loved family picnics, whether at home or a place along the road. Every year she insisted on renting a pontoon boat at Moraine. She and Jim faithfully visited the graves of their relatives, cleaning up and planting flowers every spring. Helen enjoyed playing 500 bid with family and friends. She enjoyed playing board games with her grandchildren, especially Yahtzee.

Surviving are her son, Bruce (Traci) McLafferty of Cabot; her daughter, Sharon A. McLafferty of Redondo Beach, Calif.; her grandchildren, Christian McLafferty of Saxonburg and Cayla (Frank) McLafferty Mugo of Cabot; and two great-granddaughters, Stella Grace Mugo and Ember Joann Mugo.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James McLafferty, who passed away on Jan. 3, 2022; and four sisters, Hattie Cooper, Viola Fisher, Hazel Fern and Edith Fisher, who was an infant.
