Be alert while driving

Spring has sprung, and all modes of transportation are out and about.

We have been experiencing the most amazing weather this month, and in my travels I have encountered some modes of transportation that I feel are totally inappropriate for use on our highways.

I understand bicycles are permitted on our roads. I feel this is so very dangerous. Examples are all around us. Butler County rural roads are hilly, curvy and often do not have guidelines. When drivers are behind a bicycle that is progressing under the marked speed limit, they tend to take chances to pass the bicyclist in no passing areas. Often you find yourself in a parade of backed up traffic. I have no idea for the solution of this situation, but they should have to have license plates and pay toward road maintenance like all the other users of the highways.

Believe it or not, between my home on Route 8 to downtown Butler, I have seen these modes of transportation already this year: bicycles, motorized bicycles, motorcycles, motorized scooters, hoverboards, skateboards, electric wheelchairs and golf carts. Pretty soon, they will be riding their lawn mowers to the grocery store.

This letter is to remind all of us to keep our eyes on the road as oncoming traffic could be something you would never expect. Be safe and be alert.

Donna Steinheiser, Butler
